CMU softball sweeps doubleheader with Valparaiso in first home games of season

The home crowd at Margo Yonker Stadium left happy on Tuesday as the Central Michigan softball team won both games of its double-header against Valparaiso in the first home appearance of the season.The Chippewas (13-12) won game one by mercy-rule, 10-1, as the contest was called off after five innings.After going down 3-1 to start game two, CMU responded to score the next four runs and won 5-3 behind senior shortstop CarolAnn Sexauer’s two home-runs, to sweep the double-header.




Softball goes 7-6 on road trip, looks ahead to home opener

Like many other students on campus, members of the Central Michigan softball team traveled south during spring break. The Chippewas traveled to Clearwater, Florida to take part in the University of South Florida Softball Series where they played 13 games in nine days. CMU managed a 7-6 record that reflected some of the inconsistencies the team dealt with over the course of its trip.





Softball mixes experience with youth

Just over a month into the 2015 fall season, two things are apparent for Central Michigan softball; they have experience and they have youth.The question this fall for 36 year Head Coach Margo Jonker is how the two extremes will find an equilibrium come spring.Eleven incoming freshmen will play their first collegiate softball this season for CMU, but Jonker said the influx of newcomers is creating the right kind of competition on her team.“A lot of people will be pushing last year’s starters for a starting spot,” Jonker said.



Spring sports teams to begin fall season

Three of Central Michigan University’s spring sports teams will be in action over the weekend as the fall portion of their 2015-2016 schedule kicks off.Golf CMU’s women’s golf team will travel south to Michigan State University this weekend for the 32nd annual Mary Fossum Invitational, at Forest Akers in East Lansing. The invitational begins with shotgun starts Saturday at 9 a.m.



Softball falls to Ball State in extra innings, needs three wins Saturday to win MAC Tournament

The road to regionals just got a lot tougher for Central Michigan University softball.The Chippewas erased a 2-0 Cardinal lead with runs in the fourth and sixth inning and put the potential game-winning runner on second with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn’t steal the win Friday.With two outs in the top of the eight inning, BSU’s Selena Reyna was hit by a pitch from sophomore pitcher Rachael Knapp.

Two clutch Bowling Green State University home runs spoiled Central Michigan University softball’s senior day Sunday as it dropped the regular season finale 3-2 to the Falcons in nine innings.After leading for the first five innings, CMU relinquished the lead and failed to recapture it despite having chances to do so.“I’m very disappointed in the outcome of the game,” said Head Coach Margo Jonker.


Softball splits doubleheader with Toledo

The Central Michigan University softball team split a home series with the University of Toledo Friday at Joker Marchant Stadium.The Rockets were able to take the first game 2-0, while the Chippewas bounced back in game two to win 7-4.After Friday’s action, CMU is now 24-20 overall and 11-7 in Mid-American Conference play.Game One: Toledo 2, CMU 0It was a pitcher’s duel throughout, with each team scoreless through six innings.

Playing its final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday, Central Michigan University’s softball team defeated Michigan State University 3-1 at Margo Jonker Stadium.At 23-19 and 10-6 in the Mid-American Conference, CMU is tied for third in the conference’s west division with Northern Illinois and Western Michigan.“It’s always good to beat in-state rivals,” said Head Coach Margo Jonker.
