In fact, he has lived it.

The director of Student Life said he has heard about the tale that when one kisses his or her significant other in front of the Central Michigan University seal near Warriner Hall, the couple will enjoy a fruitful relationship.

Voisin took the myth one step further.

It was September 1990 when he told his wife, Kim, assistant director of Residence Life, they were going to the Malt Shoppe, then located in the Student Book Exchange complex, 209 E. Bellows St.

“I had an ulterior motive, though, which was to walk in front of the seal and propose,” he said. “I’m assuming I gave her a kiss after I asked her to marry me.”

Voisin said, so far, the myth has proved very true.

“Almost 20 years later of wedded bliss and three children, I would think the myth is true,” he said.

This is just one of several myths CMU students hear about when they come to campus. Here are a few others that Central Michigan Life attempted to prove or disprove:

If you get hit by a vehicle, you get free tuition — Myth Busted

Most students have heard the lore of getting hit by a vehicle. The idea behind the story is if any student is hit while on campus, the university has to pay for their tuition because of the pain they endured.

“It’s all a myth,” said Dean of Students Bruce Roscoe. “There is no university policy there.”

He said students have tried to get free tuition using the myth, but it has not worked.

“A father called and said his daughter has been hit by a CMU faculty member and, therefore, she was entitled to all of these wonderful things,” he said. “We said first off, ‘Wow, how’s your daughter? Because we haven’t heard about this.’ (He said) ‘Well, she’s fine.’ Anyway, it was just all a story.”

Roscoe said if the university is at fault, there is a little bit of a gray area and it is not standard practice for the university to pay medical bills. If the university is negligent in such a situation, the student’s insurer would work with the university’s insurer, he said.

If your roommate in your room dies, you get free tuition — Myth Busted

Roscoe said the same facts as getting hit by a vehicle also apply if a student’s roommate dies in a residence hall.

The university does not have any rules in place that say either way on the issue.

“There are no policies that state … if a student dies, his or her roommates have all of these things happen to them, nothing along that line,” Roscoe said.

Walking through the row of bricks near Warriner Mall before an exam will end in an ‘F’ — Myth Plausible

Another myth many students are told is walking through the circle of bricks in Warriner Mall on the day of an exam will net them an ‘F.’

The circle of bricks, the center of CMU’s Old Central Hall, the university’s first gymnasium that was open in 1909 and was demolished in 1974.

Voisin said he has heard of the rumor, but has not heard of it actually put to the test.

“I have nothing to confirm or deny that,” Voisin said.

Sneaking into the tunnels under the school means instant expulsion — Myth Busted

There is a series of tunnels around campus connecting residence halls and buildings. They are used for campus heating systems by Facilities Management.

Rumor has it any student caught in the tunnels is instantly expelled, no questions asked.

“That’s not true,” Roscoe said. “A student is always afforded due process — we might have an immediate suspension until there is a hearing, but we don’t have anything in the books saying if you’re in a tunnel, you’re expelled.”

Roscoe said there definitely would be trouble, however.

“The tunnels are usually locked, so a student would be going into a cornered-off area or a restricted area, and we would probably discipline a student for going someplace where he or she shouldn’t go, where they have no right to go,” he said.

Legends of the Dark takes attendees on a journey of CMU’s haunted legends. The tours, hosted by Trout Hall, cover 13 campus myths.

Tours begin at 7:30 p.m. and end at 10:20 p.m., leaving every 10 minutes from the Down Under Food Court in the Bovee University Center.

The cost is $1 in advance and $3 at the door. Tickets may be purchased at the CMU Box Office or Bovee University Center.

The tour covers a broad range of campus locations. Such locations include Warriner Hall, Calkins Hall, Barnes Hall, Sloan Hall and Warriner
Hall’s Seal. One legend includes a mysterious 911 phone call coming from an empty Calkins Hall room.

Trout Resident Hall Director Ann Krzyzaniak said the event is more like a haunted house.

“It’s not only a legend tour but, also, with each tour there are scarers and creepers that roam around and look like CMU students,” said
Krzyzaniak, a Mount Pleasant resident. “Scarers hide in a bush or behind a wall and jump out. Creepers wear black face paint and masks.”

Krzyzaniak said Calkins Hall residents make eerie noises when tour guides tell the tale of Calkins Hall ghost.

“Calkin Hall residents have fun with that and make spooky noises during the tours,” Krzyzaniak said.

Krzyzaniak also said the tour guides wear scary costumes or face makeup during the tours. She said something new will take place during
this year’s tours.

“There’s a surprise ending that is not revealed,” Krzyzaniak said.

Approximately 80 people sign up to help with the tours each year. Individuals from Trout Hall Council Members, Trout Hall Residents and
other resident halls volunteer.

A volunteer’s work can include being tour guides, creepers, scarers or handling registration.

The tours raise money for Sexual Aggression Peer Advocates, Trout Hall’s philanthropy. Each year, the Trout Hall Council chooses a new
philanthropy to fund.

SAPA Director and Associate Professor of Physical Education and Sports Steve Thompson said the funds help more than the group’s budget.

“We’re very thankful that a Resident Hall would choose SAPA as their philanthropy,” Thompson said. “Supporting SAPA is helping survivors.”
