The preliminary exam for the Weidman man charged with murdering his wife this month has been postponed until Dec. 15.

The hearing was first scheduled for 1 p.m. today at the Isabella County Courthouse, 200 N. Main St., for Jason Lantz Fish. The postponed time will also be at 1 p.m.

Fish is accused of murdering his wife, Stephanie Rochelle Fish, 34. He is charged with one count of homicide, open murder, one count of possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of felony firearms.

After allegedly murdering his wife, Fish left town with the couple’s 4-year-old son Brody. Jason and Brody were located in Genessee County Nov. 20 and brought back to Isabella County.

The Isabella County Sheriff’s Department discovered Stephanie’s body in a crawl space inside the couple’s Weidman home Nov. 21.

County Prosecutor Larry Burdick said Fish’s attorney made the motion to move the hearing to give her more time to prepare for the case.

Fish’s attorney was just appointed Monday and granting her more time was not an unreasonable request for a murder case, Burdick said.

Jason Lantz Fish, a 34-year-old Weidman resident, was arrested Monday on an open murder charge for the death of his wife Stephanie Rochelle Fish, also a 34-year-old from Weidman.

She was found dead in the home she shared with Jason, located in the 900 block of North Rolland Road.

Stephanie and her 4-year-old son Brody Fish were first reported missing Friday, and an Amber Alert was issued for Brody.

Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski said Brody and Jason were located in Genessee County Sunday night by a deputy, who saw Jason’s green 2011 Ford Explorer at a rest area.

“He knew that was the Amber Alert vehicle. He made contact with both Jason Fish and Brody,” Mioduszewski said. “He indicated they were both fine and Brody did not seem to be in any kind of distress.”

Jason and Brody were brought back to the Isabella County Jail, where Jason was interrogated.

Jason said Stephanie had run off with another man and he was very upset and thinking about suicide, an affidavit stated.

He said he did not know where Stephanie was, but that she left her phone at the residence and she must have acquired a phone through her new boyfriend.

Chad Paulsen, Stephanie’s boss at Blanchard Lanes Bowling Alley, received a phone call from Jason at about 10 a.m. Saturday morning. Jason said he was taking Stephanie to rehab for finding needles in her purse, and she would not be at work for 30 to 45 days.

Paulsen said Stephanie was at his house Friday evening visiting with his girlfriend Deanna Page. While there, Stephanie’s husband Jason Fish kept calling her, wanting her to come home.

Jason said he argued with Stephanie about leaving with Brody while she was intoxicated. During the interrogation, Jason said he drove Stephanie’s Jeep behind the house and got it stuck in the mud, preventing her from leaving.

When he walked back into the house, Stephanie had a 22 cal. rifle pointed at him, he said. He then got into a fight to grab the rifle from her, resulting in Stephanie being shot in the head, he said during the interrogation.

Brody was sleeping in the bedroom across from the bathroom during the gunshot.

“Daddy put Mommy in the bath tub and shot her with a gun bang, bang,” Brody said to Todd Graham, the forensic interviewer.

Jason said he then dragged the body from the bathroom into the northwest bedroom and put Stephanie’s body down in a crawl space and covered her up with gravel, the affidavit stated.

The rifle was found on the shelf behind the bar in the recreation room. Blood was found on the kitchen floor, kitchen door to the recreation room, in the bathroom, on the barrel of the rifle and on the carpet in front of the crawlspace.

The suspect had scratches on his left shin and on his left cheek. He also had bruises on both of his shins.

Jason is being held without bail on one count of homicide, open murder, one count of possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of felony firearms.

A missing persons case has concluded with the death of Stephanie Rochelle Fish, and the arrest of her husband.

Jason Lantz Fish, a 34-year-old from Weidman, was arrested by the Isabella County Sheriff’s Department Monday morning on an open murder charge. Stephanie, a 34-year-old from Weidman, was found dead in the home she shared with Jason, located in the 900 block of North Rolland Road in Sherman Township. The Isabella County Sheriff’s Department got a search warrant at around 3 a.m. Monday.

Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski said they were able to locate Stephanie through several interviews with friends and family.

“It was a combination of several different factors. We got some information through those types of individuals as well as Jason Fish,” Mioduszewski said. “We had enough information to know that it wasn’t just a missing person case.”

According to a press release sent out by the Isabella County Sheriff’s Department, the arrest stems from a domestic dispute that took place Friday at the couple’s home.

“We do know that there were some issues between him and her,” Mioduszewski said. “We don’t know what sparked the problem Friday night. They had some marital problems, no question about that.”

Stephanie was last seen at approximately 7:30 p.m. Friday at a friend’s house, Isabella County Sheriff Leo Moiduszewski said Sunday evening before Stephanie’s body was discovered.

“(Her friend) just said, ‘Hey I haven’t been able to get a hold of Stephanie,’” Mioduszewski said.

A .22 caliber rifle was taken as possible evidence in the case. The press release stated an autopsy for Stephanie will be scheduled for Monday or Tuesday. Mioduszewski said they cannot confirm the cause of death because the Michigan State Police Crime Lab is investigating the scene.

“The reason we don’t know for sure is we didn’t touch the body at all,” Mioduszewski said. “It appears there’s a good chance she might have sustained a gunshot.”

The case began as a missing persons investigation Sunday, when an Amber Alert was issued for the couple’s four-year-old son Brody Fish. Mioduszewski said Brody and Jason were located in Genessee County Sunday night by a deputy, who saw Jason’s green 2011 Ford Explorer at a rest area.

“He knew that was the Amber Alert vehicle. He made contact with both Jason Fish and Brody,” Mioduszewski said. “He indicated they were both fine, and Brody did not seem to be in any kind of distress.”

Jason was brought back to Mount Pleasant for questioning. Brody is currently staying with a relative. Mioduszewski said he is not sure where the child is going to end up.

“What’s going to happen is the courts are going to determine what’s going to be best for Brody in the long run,” Mioduszewski said. “Whether it’s a family member or some sort of placement.”

A press release from Isabella County Undersheriff John Tellis stated Jason Lantz Fish was arraigned at 3:30 pm Monday in the 76th Judicial District Court for the State of Michigan.

He is being held without bail on one count of homicide, open murder, one count of possession of a firearm by a felon and two counts of felony firearms.

The search of a Union Township home Friday morning led to various charges against Samuel Clayton Nelsen of Mount Pleasant.

According to a press release from the Isabella County Sheriff’s Department, information was received on Thursday about a subject possibly selling marijuana. A search warrant was obtained Friday morning for Nelsen’s house.

Recovered from the 58-year-old man’s home were 56 Vicodin pills, 2.1 pounds of packaged marijuana, a 12-gauge shotgun with shells and vehicle picks for gaining entry into vehicles.

Nelsen is charged with delivery/manufacture of a schedule 3 controlled substance, a 7-year felony, and delivery/manufacture of marijuana, a four-year felony.

“It’s not uncommon for the sheriff’s department to arrest people for delivery of marijuana,” Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski said.

He was also charged with a two-year felony for the possession of the shotgun, a one-year misdemeanor for possession of marijuana and a 90-day misdemeanor for the possession of the vehicle pick.

Isabella County Undersheriff John Tellis said marijuana cases are pretty common, and a lot of people who use and distribute marijuana are in violation of state law.

“Marijuana is a very common drug, and we see a lot of that,” Tellis said. “I think there’s a ready market for marijuana. I think the Michigan (Medical) Marihuana Act that was passed recently has clouded the rules in terms of what’s legal and what’s not legal. That would explain why it’s a fairly common thing we see a lot of.”

The press release states Nelsen was arraigned in the 76th Trial Court. His bond was set at $50,000 cash or surety. Nelsen remains in the Isabella County Jail.

Two suspects are in custody after a stabbing incident occurred Saturday morning near Deerfield Road.

Nicholas Corniuk, a 20-year-old sophomore from Cadillac, was transported by ambulance to Central Michigan Community Hospital for injury treatments after being stabbed during a fight at around 3 a.m. at 3400 E. Deerfield Road.

Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski said it is very rare for a stabbing crime to happen in Isabella County.

“As far as the stabbing goes, it is very, very unusual,” Mioduszewski said.

According to a press release sent out by Isabella County Undersheriff John Tellis, Corniuk told police he and his friends were driving near Deerfield Road when a car behind them began flashing its headlights.

Both Corniuk and the car behind pulled over to the side of the road.

The two occupants of the car behind Corniuk got out of their car and walked toward Corniuk as he got out of the car. Once the two suspects were within close range of Corniuk, they proceeded to fight Corniuk and knocked him to the ground.

The press release stated once the fight ended, Corniuk noticed blood dripping down from his left arm. He became disoriented and was driven by one of the car’s occupants to Deerfield Village Apartments, 3516 E. Deerfield Road.

After telling the police what happened, Corniuk was taken to the hospital.

While the deputies were investigating the area, officers from Central Michigan University Police Department stopped what Tellis described as a mid-sized, Pontiac G6 with two people in it. The two were later identified as the suspects responsible for the stabbing.

Both suspects were taken to the Isabella County Jail for assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.

Tellis said the two suspects’ identities were not released since they have not been arraigned yet.

“This a very serious assault. More serious than most (of) the assaults that we respond to,” Tellis said. “That is pretty high up on the scale. It is outside the norm.”

Tellis said he doesn’t understand the suspects’ motives and believes it was a random act of violence.

“I don’t believe the suspects and the victim knew each other,” Tellis said. “Nothing indicates that they had any knowledge of one another.”

Isabella County Sheriff Leo Mioduszewski has been an active member of the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association since 2005 and recently chose to take his involvement a step further.

The MSA elected Mioduszewski to act as Secretary-Treasurer on its Board of Directors beginning in January 2012.

“I’m very happy and honored to help form legislation to help keep officers safe in the field,” Mioduszewski said.

Mioduszewski said his inspiration to join the MSA came from his fellow deputies who encouraged him to represent their interests, while working with the Michigan House of Representatives in their creation of new legislation.

Such legislation can directly affect officers in the field of duty, he said.

“I’d like to accomplish funding issues with the state to establish payment plans that ensure realistic budgets for our jail systems,” he said.

According to the Isabella County Sheriff’s Department website, Mioduszewski has over 22 years of law enforcement experience and is a graduate the FBI National Academy and the National Sheriff’s Institute. He has also earned an Advanced Police Training certificate from the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards.

He is a trained K-9 Handler and has been for eight years with K-9 Lizzy. Additionally, Mioduszewski is active in many professional associations such as the National Sheriff’s Association and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

He is active in community clubs including the Mount Pleasant Kiwanis Club, the Mount Pleasant Optimist Club, Mount Pleasant Lions Club and the Mount Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce.

Detective Sgt. David Patterson of the Isabella County Sheriff’s Department said Mioduszewski tries to be a voice for all officers around the state.

“He believes in training and educating officers in Michigan in order to ensure safety for both officers and citizens alike,” Patterson said. “He’s always looking out for all officers and he’s well-liked around the state. Leo was a good choice for the position.”
