My top three sports moments of 2009


Last year brought many great moments to CMU athletics.

It saw three teams — football, soccer and wrestling — win Mid-American Conference Championships and three athletes earn All-America honors.

Top five CMU sports moments of 2009


The 2009 edition of CMU athletics brought the university three Mid-American Conference Championships (football, soccer and wrestling), two top 25 finishes (football and wrestling) and three athletes earn All-America honors (Mike Miller, Scotti Sentes and Greg Pilling).

With success ranging from individual performances to team triumpth, 2009 will a memorable one for the Chippewas. Here are the year’s top five sports stories.

GVSU students enroll in MSU med school


GVSU developed the Early Assurance Program with Michigan State University’s
College of Human Medicine, in which a group of six GVSU students will be admitted each year for the next three years.

A team worth watching


Coach Butch Jones took some time to look ahead during his press conference following CMU’s 29-27 win over Michigan State.

He took a second away from looking back on one of the biggest wins of his career — and the school’s history — to look ahead to Saturday and the team’s home opener against Alcorn State at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

Statement Victory: Embracing history 17 years later


EAST LANSING — Herb Deromedi knows something about beating Michigan State football at Spartan Stadium.

He coached the CMU football team during its back-to-back upset victories against the Spartans in 1991 and 1992. Images of him sitting on his players’ shoulders after shocking the college football world are engrained in the minds of many Chippewas fans.

EAST LANSING — Athletics Director Dave Heeke said he received about 30 texts and 20 e-mails from people all over the country shortly after CMU secured Saturday’s 29-27 upset against MSU.
