CMU’s New Tailgating Procedures
The end of an era for CMU student tailgating?
QUICK LINKS: Overview | The Latest | All Coverage | Multimedia
One of Central Michigan University’s most notable football gameday traditions is the student tailgate on Lot 63, south of Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
Scenes such as the one in the photo (right) were all too common for home games. Students, Greeks and alumni came together and packed the parking lot with their trucks, grills, flags and alcohol to root for CMU and celebrate. The contagious atmosphere separated Central Michigan tailgate from many other similar schools, as several publications named CMU the best gameday atmosphere in the Mid-American Conference.
However, in August 2009, citing incidents of fighting, intoxication, broken glass and other hazards, a tailgating committee at CMU, comprised of administrators, staff and students, decided to make changes to the policy. They include:
- Enforcement of state laws (e.g., minor-in-possession and other alcohol related offenses).
- No kegs or excessive amounts of alcohol.
- A single individual will not be permitted to bring more than six beers or one small plastic bottle (i.e., not greater than one pint) in the tailgate area. This applies to walk-in tailgaters and those entering by vehicle.
- All glass is prohibited.
- All garbage must be placed in the provided garbage bag.
- No external sound systems. Volume of vehicle sound systems should be at a reasonable level that does not disrupt other individuals tailgating.
- No animals.
- Only small grills are permitted.
- Cars are not permitted to leave area until the third quarter begins.
- Alcohol consumption is prohibited while waiting in line for entry into designated parking lot areas.
- No trailers.
- Individuals may not walk in with grills or coolers.
- Parking privileges in and/or access to the student tailgating area will be revoked if violations of these policies occur.

Students did not take a liking to the rules. For CMU’s first home game against Alcorn State on Sept. 19, many fans boycotted tailgating at Lot 63, mostly by taking the celebration to Main Street instead. The population at CMU’s student tailgate went from thousands to around 300 in less than one year.
