Summer construction projects making progress on campus

A number of summer construction projects have made great strides in giving Central Michigan University a facelift before students arrive, according to Facilities Management officials.

The first of the underground concrete support structures will begin in the next two weeks on the $95 million Biosciences Building, which is slated as a two-year project. Installation of new utilities throughout the site will continue into the fall and a temporary road from East Campus Drive to the building site will begin shortly.

Plant Engineering and Planning official Linda Jensen said on the whole, progress has been steady. Central Michigan Life attempted to contact Steve Lawrence, associate vice president of Facilities Management, and several project managers, but they were unavailable for comment.

The Clark Construction Company, who is contracted for the Biosciences Building construction, declined comment on their progress.

The pillars will extend 30 feet into the earth to provide a solid base for the structure. In the next two months, 140 support structures containing 1,900 cubic yards of concrete are scheduled to be completed.

The Biosciences Building is scheduled to be completed in September 2016.

According to a July 16 construction update from Facilities Management and University Communications, work on Grawn 117 is nearing completion. Final painting, new flooring and installation of ventilators for the $209,800 project are planned for this week, with glass and framing scheduled to arrive next week.

Glass walls will enclose the room equipped with Bloomberg Terminals, which will allow business students to monitor and analyze real-time financial market d?ata and practice making trades on an electronic trading platform.

Furniture is being installed in the Dow Active Learning Classrooms, meanwhile, Information Technology is setting up furniture connections and installing monitors. Carpeting, doors, hardware and cabling were installed last week in the classrooms.

Information technology equipment installation is scheduled for completion next week for improvements to two lecture halls and two classrooms in Moore Hall.
