Field hockey wins share of MAC crown

Central Michigan University’s field hockey team won a share of the Mid-American Conference title after upsetting Kent State University 2-1 on Saturday.

This marks CMU’s first title since the 2002 season.

With her ninth goal of the 2014 season, senior Cayleigh Immelman scored what turned out to be the eventual game-winner with less than a minute left in the first half.

The goal proved to be the difference against KSU.

Cristy Freese, head coach of the Chippewas, was eager to praise her team after the one goal victory.

“We lost to Kent in overtime last year for a title, and today our team wasn’t going to be denied,” Freese said.

Junior Kaysie Gregory got the scoring started for CMU with a goal off of a rebound. Gregory ended the game with a goal and an assist and she now leads the MAC in assists.

“Winning a title was a goal since the first game, it’s extremely important to us,” Gregory said.

Gregory’s sixth goal of the season was quickly matched when KSU’s Hannah Faulkner scored her 18th goal in 2014 to tie the game. Faulkner leads the MAC in goals scored, points and shots per game.

The Chippewas held her to just two shots on goal in the game.

KSU averages 21.6 shots per game but they had six total in the game.

In the second half, the Chippewas defense halted the attack of the Golden Flashes. KSU controlled the ball in the second half, but only managed two shots.

CMU will compete in the MAC Championship on Nov. 7 in Kent, Ohio.
