Cheryl Stacy was introduced as the new Central Michigan University women's golf coach during a press conference at the Mount Pleasant Country Club Wednesday.

Stacy replaces Tom Beidleman, who was fired in August. CMU Athletics parted ways with Beidleman when the department learned he did not have an undergraduate degree.

Stacy previously served as the head women's golf coach at the University of Michigan from 2009-13.

"Coach Stacy brings a diverse background that is important as we continue to build a solid foundation for our program. Her head coaching experience and leadership ability makes her a great fit and I expect that she will work well with our student-athletes," said Dave Heeke, CMU athletic director. "We never look at just one thing when we hire a candidate. Cheryl presents all the right qualities."

Stacy has a four-year contract, worth $55,000 per year.

During her time in Ann Arbor, U-M advanced to NCAA Central Region twice as a team, placing 18th in 2011 and 16th in 2012. Two student-athletes earned All-Big Ten recognition. In 2012, the Wolverines earned their highest finish at the Big Ten Championships under Stacy, placing fourth.

"It is definitely going to be different," Stacy said. "I was surprised when I was contacted about this job. (College golf coach) jobs usually don't come up this time of year. I was thrilled though. This is an incredibly exciting day for me and this program."

While at Michigan, Stacy also assisted in the planning and development of its $2.5 million indoor golf facility.

In addition to coaching the CMU team, Stacy will serve as the Director of Instruction at the Mount Pleasant Country Club.

Marcy Weston, associate athletic director and chair of the search committee said the eight CMU golfers are "thrilled" to officially have a coach again.

"They've been looking forward to this day and so have we," Weston said. "In (Stacy)'s interview, she really hit the point of thinking about student-athletes. She kept going back to that over and over again. Dave (Heeke) and I made eye contact and then her name just kept coming up in follow up conversations."

Both Heeke and Weston said CMU Athletics wanted to be as vigilant as possible when it came to Stacy's hiring process following Beidleman’s firing.

"We wanted to be thorough," Heeke said. "We tweaked a few things in our process. I never want to put a time table on a hiring process. That ensures that we will get the best possible candidate and I think we did that here."

A standout collegiate player at Ohio State, Stacy earned All-America honors in 1984 and 1985. She was instrumental in leading OSU to eight tournament wins, including three consecutive Big Ten titles, and was a two-time medalist at the conference championship.

Stacy was inducted into The Ohio State University Women’s Sport Hall of Fame in 2001 and is a Class A Member of the LPGA Teaching and Club.
