Gymnastics final rotation proves not enough in second place finish in five team meet

Gymnastics failed to accomplish their goal of a 196 team score but saw good individual performances.

The Chippewas fired back from their slow start last week by scoring over 49 points in their first three events, but could not finish strong coming in second of five behind the Rutgers.

CMU could not finish as they struggled on bars, their final event, finishing with 195.725 points, more than Towson University, Yale, and Southern Connecticut State.

Once again junior Taylor Noonan headlined the rotation with a 9.875 followed by junior Halle Moraw with a 9.85.

The Chippewas have been consistently good on floor. Moraw has moved closer to her goal of a perfect 10 each meet and scored a 9.925. Sophomore Taylor Bolender scored a near perfect 9.9 on her floor exercise.

CMU scored a season-high vault with 49.275. Kirsten Petzold lead with a nearly perfect vault score, 9.925, with her older sister Brittany right behind her, scoring 9.875.

The vault score tied for second in school history.

Halle Moraw had her best day of the season, scoring a 9.925 in floor, 9.85 on beam and a 9.875 on vault.

The Chippewas perform well in meets with three or more teams, in the Michigan-Illinois Challenge and their meet against No. 14 Illinois and No. 23 Ohio State, CMU scored over 196 every time.

Head coach Jerry Reighard has emphasized how important multi-team meets are, as they resemble the Mid-American Conference Championship meet atmosphere and rotation.

The MAC Championships are in two weeks in Ypsilanti.

The Chippewas challenge rivals Western Michigan on Saturday at 2 p.m. in McGuirk Arena for their final regular season meet and home meet of the year.
