A pair of former CMU football players signed over the weekend to play for their hometown professional football team.

Tight end Deon Butler and linebacker Justin Cherocci each signed agreements to join the Detroit Lions' 90-man roster midway through the NFL preseason.

Cherocci is a native of Rochester Hills and participated in Lions minicamp last spring after going undrafted. The All Mid-American Conference selection and 2014 team captain led CMU with 117 tackles last fall.

Butler also worked out with the Lions this spring, and is originally from Detroit. He caught 52 passes for 651 yards and two touchdowns during five years in Mount Pleasant.

The former Chippewa was involved in the famous Hail Mary touchdown pass at the end of the Inaugural Popeyes Bahamas Bowl, which CMU lost 49-48.
