More than 100 student-athletes receive varsity jackets
Central Michigan University student athletes are honored during the Chippewas game against Kent State on Oct. 29 at Kelly/Shorts Stadium
A total of 200 Central Michigan University student-athletes from 16 varsity sports were honored with the presentation of their varsity letterman’s jackets before Saturday’s game against Kent State on Saturday.
Dave Heeke, director of athletics at CMU, said there is a “special meaning" behind the jackets.
“It’s a special thing when you earn your first letter award,” he said. “The jacket is about pride, history, tradition and there’s a responsibility with it. It’s a neat day to celebrate the accomplishments of all the great, young people.”
Among the the athletes earning their letterman's jacket was Gabriella Beauvais of the women’s track and field team. Beauvais said she likes the look of the jacket and can see herself wearing it often.
“I’m so happy I have this jacket,” she said. “It’s warm, I can wear it in the winter and I look dope.”
Sophomore pitcher Dazon Cole of the baseball team — who came to CMU in 2015 from Wabash Valley College in Illinois — said the jacket is a sign of how far he was come athletically and academically.
“It feels great after the coaches added me coming back from junior college,” Cole said. “It’s an honor to be back here at CMU and I’m just ready for the season.”
Sophomore guard Corey Redman of the basketball team said wearing the jacket brings him back to his high school days.
“Really cool to earn it after all of the hard work,” he said. “I wore my varsity jacket all the time in high school, so it’s cool to get one for here and be able to show everyone I’m part of a sports team.”
