Women's basketball looks for road win in last non-conference game

Following a solid resume-building win against Big Ten Conference opponent Illinois, the Central Michigan women's basketball team will return to action Wednesday night to take on Middle Tennessee State and wrap up the non-conference portion of the 2016-17 season.

After the impressive 82-51 win against the Illini on Monday Dec. 19, CMU (8-3) has now won seven of their last eight games. During that stretch, the Chippewas were averaging just under 76 points per game and holding their opponents to under 59 points per game.

In the three games its lost this season, CMU allowed its opponents to average 80 points per game.

Through all 11 games this season, sophomore guard Presley Hudson leads the team in scoring with 14.7 per game while shooting just under 39 percent from the field and just over 33 percent from 3-point range.

However, junior guard Cassie Breen is just behind Hudson in scoring, averaging 14.6 points per game. Through the ten games before her injury, senior forward Jewel Cotton averaged 14.5 points per game.

There is still no official word on Cotton’s injury status, but coach Sue Guevara did sound positive after the win against Illinois, saying Cotton could have played if needed.

“She dressed and could've been available, but she wasn't quite 100 percent,” Guevara said of the injured senior. “She has about five days to rest and hopefully that will help her back to 100 percent.”

The Chippewas have yet to win a game on the road this season, so this will be their last chance to get a road win in the non-conference part of the schedule against the Blue Raiders (4-6). Having Cotton back is something that could probably help them earn that first victory away from McGuirk Arena.

The game will start at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The Chippewas will then begin Mid-American Conference play against Kent State at 1 p.m. on New Years Eve.
