Hudson, Moore lead women's basketball past Akron

Coming off of a career-high performance, sophomore guard Presley Hudson made sure that her team got its seventh home win on the season Wednesday night.

Central Michigan (10-4 overall, 2-0 MAC) defeated Akron (7-7, 0-2), 89-62 while Hudson added 35 points on 66 percent shooting from the field and went 6-for-9 from the 3-point line.

“I worked on trying to play my best, and I play for my team as I said before,” Hudson said. “My players are able to find me when I’m open time and time again.”

While Hudson had another great game, junior forward Tinara Moore also had an outstanding game with season-high 29 points. Moore also added eight rebounds and went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line. Moore and Hudson combined for 64 points in the game.

Moore said that her performance reflects the progression she is making as the season goes along.

“It really is just me having confidence to shoot the ball well inside,” she said. “I don’t think it’s Akron, I just think it happens some nights. I’ve been getting in the gym more and its paying off.”

In her 300th game as the Head Coach of the Chippewas, Sue Guevara said she thought it was the defense that played a big role in the victory.

“We talked about our defense at the half, and thats what I was the most pleased with in the second half,” she said. “We held them to 12 points in the third and fourth quarter, which was much better, but I wasn't a happy camper at halftime.”

Akron started to get back in the game at the end of the first quarter going on a 6-0 run, making it just a 25-22 score.

CMU responded with a 9-0 run to open the second quarter and went on to outscore the the Zips 25-16 in the quarter, never having to look back.

CMU shot 50.8 percent from the field and 45 percent from 3-point range. While Akron did turn the ball over 25 times, the Chippewas committed 17 turnovers, which is still a number Guevara said she wants to see get lower.

The Chippewas will play their second of three home games in a row against Buffalo at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Buffalo handed CMU a loss in the MAC championship to end the Chippewas’ season a year ago.
