Women's basketball returns home looking for second conference win
After earning it’s first Mid-American Conference win, the Central Michigan women's basketball team will be back in action at McGuirk arena Wednesday.
Following the team's 91-78 victory against Kent State on New Year's Eve, the Chippewas (9-4 overall, 1-0 MAC) will host Akron (7-5, 0-1) at 7 p.m.
For Akron, playing on the road will be nothing new for the Zips as eight of their 12 games have been away from home. CMU on the other hand, is 6-1 at McGuirk this season.
Head Coach Sue Guevara said she knows the competition will not get any easier moving forward, and this game against the Zips could very well be even tougher.
“Kent State was a much improved team, they really did a good job attacking us and driving all game long,” she said. “But every time they gave us an attack, we responded with one of our own. We got a good Akron team coming to play us in a few days. We're going to have to play with that same kind of grit to win.”
The Zips are shooting just under 40 percent from the field per game and are shooting 32 percent from 3-point range.
Akron leans on two seniors, both guards, Hannah Plybon and Alex Ricketts. Plybon averages 19.5 points per game and Ricketts averages 10.3 points per game, so it will be key for junior guard Cassie Breen and sophomore guard Presley Hudson to step up the Chippewas' defense to contain the duo.
CMU is averaging 72.4 points per game, while the Zips are averaging 66.
In six of the Chippewas’ nine wins this season, they have held their opponents under 70 points.
