Softball picks up 2 wins, improves to 3-1 on weekend road trip.

It took 2,600 miles of travel in their first two weeks of the regular season, but the Central Michigan softball team is back to winning.

With wins today against Robert Morris (4-3) and Massachusetts (11-0), the Chippewas improve to 3-1 on their trip south to Madeira Beach and 3-6 overall.

"It think it's really important that we get on a winning streak so we start believing we can do it and start believing we can put it all together," head coach Margo Jonker said.

In game one, CMU out-hit the Colonials 7-5 in their 4-3 victory. Junior outfielder Sara Hansen led the Chippewas with two hits. Sophomore Rachel Vieira also contributed one hit, one RBI and scored a run off two at-bats.

Knapp dominates

Chippewa ace, senior Rachael Knapp, pitched all six innings before the game was called a mercy in CMU's 11-0 victory against Massachusetts.

Knapp allowed only four hits and struck out eight batters against the Minutemen. Knapp improves to 2-3 on the year with the win.

"She was really on target today," Jonker said about Knapp. "Her balls were moving well, her location was good and she just did a really nice job."

Nine Chippewa batters recorded a hit against Massachusetts, and as a team, out-hit the Minutemen 18-4. Senior third-basemen Taylor Lewallen led the offensive explosion with 3 hits, an RBI and one run scored.

"Coach Bracamonte had given the players some adjustments at the plate," Jonker said. "They listened and did a great job of executing that."
