Women's basketball looks to end losing skid against Ohio

Coming off of back-to-back losses for the first time this season, the Central Michigan women’s basketball team takes on Ohio tonight at 6 p.m. at McGuirk Arena.

The Chippewas (14-6, overall, 6-2 MAC) remained in third place in the Mid-American Conference West Division after Saturday’s 74-72 loss to Toledo.

The Bobcats (16-4, 7-2) meanwhile, come in as winners of their last four games and are in first place in the MAC East Division.

Here’s what to look for in tonight's contest.

Feed Moore

Junior forward Tinara Moore has lead her team in scoring over the past three games.

According to Head Coach Sue Guevara, “(Moore) has been our only source of offense.”

In Moore’s most recent outing against the Toledo, she scored a season-high 33 points on 10-for-18 shooting and went 11-for-13 from the free throw line. The junior also added eight rebounds and a pair of blocks. Moore has averaged 25.6 points per game during the last three games.

Where is Hudson and Breen?

Guevara said that in order for her team to get back to its winning ways, it will need more than just Moore carrying the scoring load.

“You can’t win games with just one scorer, we need to make the open shots when we have them," she said.

Two of CMU’s most important offensive threats have struggled during the past few games.

Sophomore guard Presley Hudson still leads the team and is third in the MAC in scoring at 18.6 points per game, but scored just nine points against Toledo and eight against Buffalo to snap a 15-game streak of scoring in double figures.

Junior guard Cassie Breen is averaging 12.4 points per game and has made big shots to help her team all season from 3-point range. However, last week she scored just five points in two games.

Hot Bobcats

During this four-game winning streak, Ohio is averaging just under 73 points per game and is holding its opponents to just under 59 points per game.

The Bobcats lead the MAC with 8.8 3-pointers made per game and rank second in scoring defense, surrendering an average of 60.2.

Ohio’s senior guard Quiera Lampkins ranks second in the MAC in scoring at 19.4 points per game and leads Ohio with 48 steals on the year.

Ending the streak

The Bobcats have won the last three games in the series between the two teams after the Chippewas had previously won eight games in a row.

CMU will be going for their 11th win at home this season, while Ohio holds a road record of 7-3.

CMU is averaging 75.2 points per game on the year while Ohio is averaging just over 70 points per game.

Ohio is shooting an even 40 percent from the field on the year while the Chippewas are shooting just over 43 percent on the season.
