Women's basketball seeks to extend win streak against Western Michigan

After winning two games in a row on the road, the Central Michigan women’s basketball team will return back to McGuirk Arena to face in-state rival Western Michigan Saturday.

The game will start at 1 p.m. in part of CMU’s annual “Play4Kay” game, which is part of the grassroots fundraising initiative of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

After CMU (17-6 overall, 9-2 Mid-American Conference) defeated Northern Illinois 109-94 on Wednesday, the Chippewas find themselves in second place in the MAC West Division.

While the Chippewas are just one-half game behind Ball State (17-7, 10-2), the Broncos (14-8, 5-6) find themselves on the opposite end of the spectrum, sitting at fifth place in the MAC West.

WMU started the conference portion of their season strong with a 5-2 MAC record, but have lost four games in a row.

Head coach Sue Guevara said she knows the Broncos will come ready to play for a rivalry contest.

“Western (Michigan) has a good team and we know that,” Guevara said. “I don’t care what their record is, they are going to come into this game and play tough, rivalry games normally go that way. We just need to keep our every game is a championship game mindset and be ready.”

Here are some notes for todays game:

Recent Team Play

  • The Chippewas come into the game winners of three in a row, and have scored more than 100 points in the last two. CMU improved their road record to 4-5, where it had struggled at times this season.
  • While WMU does come in on a four-game losing skid, they do have a respectable road record this season. The Broncos are 7-4 in away games this year, with their most recent road game resulting in a 67-62 loss to NIU.
  • The last meeting between these in-state foes was March 9, 2016 in the MAC Tournament where the Chippewas came out on top, 66-62.

Individual and Team Statistics

  • Sophomore guard Presley Hudson leads the Chippewas in scoring and ranks third in the MAC at 18.0 points per game, while junior forward Tinara Moore (15.6) and junior guard Cassie Breen (12.3) are next up on the scoring list for CMU.
  • Sophomore forward Reyna Frost leads the MAC and ranks sixth nationally at 11.4 rebounds per game. Frost has five double-doubles on the season in points and boards.
  • Junior center Marley Hill leads the Broncos in scoring at 16.0 points per game, while sophomore forward Breanna Mobley averages 13.8 points and a team-best 10.1 rebounds per game, which is good for third in the MAC.
  • The Chippewas are out-scoring the Broncos this season in points per game by 10 points (77.4-67.4). However, the Broncos are only allowing their opponents to score 61.6 points per game this season while CMU is allowing 69.3.

Chasing History

  • Guevara, who is in her 10th year with the program, could tie the all-time wins record with a victory today. Donita Davenport holds the current record with 171 total wins over 12 years. Guevara’s career record with the Chippewas is 170-139. The Saginaw native is just seven wins shy of totaling 300 for her career as a head coach.
