Chippewas split weekend series with Broncos

The Central Michigan baseball team split a weekend series with in-state rival Western Michigan after rain caused a cancellation of Sunday's game.

The game will not be made up, therefore CMU (27-23 overall, 15-8 Mid-American Conference) holds a half-game lead over Eastern Michigan (32-18 overall, 15-9 MAC).

After losing 6-5 on Friday, CMU rebounded with a one-hit 3-0 victory over the Broncos on Saturday. Junior Zach Cooper took a no-hitter into the fifth inning, but it was broken up on a single by senior Tim Cross.

Cooper had six strikeouts and only allowed two walks in his complete game one-hitter, only needing junior Tyler Hall's third inning RBI single for run support.

The Chippewas tacked on two more runs in the ninth to give Cooper some extra cushion.

Junior Trent Howard pitched well on Friday, but the bullpen imploded for five earned runs late.

Junior William Arnold had himself quite the day, going 3-5 with 3 RBIs, including a eighth inning three-run home run.

CMU hosts Oakland in its final home game of the season at 3:05 p.m. Tuesday at Theunissen Stadium.
