EMU 11, CMU 10: Chippewas fall in 14 innings
It was a back and fourth game all night.
And rightfully so.
The Central Michigan baseball team is in the final leg of a conference race it hopes to end with a Mid-American Conference West title, but Eastern Michigan stands in the way after taking a half-game lead in the standings.
The Eagles took a victory from CMU (27-25 overall, 15-9 Mid-American Conference), beating the Chippewas 11-10 in 14 innings Thursday in Ypsilanti.
Junior catcher Kyle Peterson walked three times in the game and only had one hit, but he made it count. With junior Wally Gerbus standing on second after a double, Peterson approached the plate. He replicated Gerbus' hit, doubling to left center and giving EMU (34-18 overall, 16-8 MAC) the win.
Sophomore Brian Valente impoved to 4-0 as the winning pitcher, meanwhile, junior Ryan Longstreth fell to 1-5.
The two teams will be back on the diamond in the middle game of the finals series of the regular season at 3 p.m. Friday at Oestrike Stadium in Ypsilanti.
