Lapikas homers twice, leading Toledo past CMU

Toledo infielder Mark Lapikas hit the ball out of Theunissen Stadium.

Not once, but twice against Central Michigan.

The junior hit home runs in the second and sixth inning to propel Toledo into first place in the Mid-American West standings after it beat CMU 9-3 this afternoon.

It started well for CMU (24-21 overall, 12-7 MAC) as sophomore catcher Jordan Adams doubled to score junior William Arnold in the first, but the Rockets responded.

Two UT (24-20 overall, 13-6 MAC) runs in the following inning gave it a 2-1 lead, but it was the Chippewas’ turn to respond.

Sophomore Jordan Dean singled in the fourth and scored to tie the game at two, and in the following inning CMU regained the lead on a solo home run by Arnold.

His home run would be the last lead the Chippewas held.

The sixth inning was trouble from the beginning.

Senior outfielder Chris Dudics tripled to lead off the inning, scoring on a passed ball. With two men on, Lapikas homered for the second time in the game, capping a four-run sixth.

UT added two more in the seventh and another in the eighth.

CMU senior pitcher Bryce Morrow allowed six earned runs and eight hits in 5.2 innings, falling to 1-5 on the season.

CMU hosts Toledo at 2:05 tomorrow at Theunissen Stadium.
