CMED East, shared governance, Global Campus bookstore discussed at Board of Trustees meeting
The College of Medicine's East campus, the Central Michigan University Bookstore Global Campus Bookstore and shared governance were among a plethora of issues discussed during Thursday's board meeting.
College of Medicine Dean Earnest Yoder gave the board an update on CMED's inaugural class and the Saginaw facility. He said the program has reached 23 faculty members, which is the desired amount set by the college.
CMED will have 64 students in its inaugural class in the fall, with 85 students wait-wlisted.
Yoder also announced the design stage of CMED's Saginaw facility is near completion, and the school is beginning plans for construction. The facility will provide clinical completion for years three and four of the curriculum.
"There is clearly a need for an urban high-tech environment like Saginaw. It provides an opportunity for students to be trained in the whole spectrum. The facility in Saginaw is critical," Yoder said.
It was also announced the design costs for CMED East total $2.2 million to date. The $46.5 million facility will use land and facilities provided by both Covenant Hospital and St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw.
The board also approved a five-year lease for 6,000 square feet in the Mount Pleasant Commerce Center for a CMU Bookstore Global Campus Course Materials Distribution Center. The center, which will be located next to The Morning Sun, 711 W. Pickard St., will become a warehouse for storing and distributing text books to the Global Campus.
"We are always interested in working with private partners, and we had no space on campus for this facility. It will really benefit the students of the global campus, because they will get their textbooks on time and delivered," Vice President of Finance and Administrative Services David Burdette said. "It is self supporting. No general funding or tuition dollars will go into running the facility."
The ongoing issue of shared governance was also addressed.
The Shared Governance and Communications Committee gave a short presentation and announced they will be releasing a comprehensive report detailing the role of shared governance on campus this July.
