Offense and strong pitching aiding baseball during weekend series

Central Michigan baseball will look to finish a series sweep at noon Sunday in San Antonio when Adam Aldred (2-2, 3.29 ERA) takes the mound. Here is how the Chippewas have done so far this weekend:

SATURDAY

Freshman left-handed pitcher Nick Deeg picked up his first win of the season with the aid of a strong offensive outburst Saturday at the University of Incarnate Word, 12-1.

It was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when CMU redshirt freshman and designated hitter Adam Collins hit a triple, bringing in junior first baseman Cody Leichman.

Collins picked up another RBI in the seventh when he hit a sacrifice fly, allowing sophomore right fielder Logan Regnier to cross home after he reached bases with an RBI double scoring his brother, junior center fielder Nick.

Those three runs were enough support for Deeg who went eight innings while striking out seven and allowing six hits.

The Chippewas, who clinched their second-straight series win and moved above to 10-9, opened the flood gates in the eighth and ninth innings, scoring four and five runs respectively.

Nick Regnier finished the day with a team-high three RBI while redshirt freshman Alex Borglin added two with a triple in the ninth.

FRIDAY

CMU topped the Cardinals on Friday 6-4, behind another offensive outburst in the fifth inning.

Senior Pat Kaminska improved to 3-1 on the season by going 6.1 innings and allowing one earned run on eight hits and five strikeouts.

Down 3-0 in the fifth, Kaminska and the Chippewas took the lead after junior Tyler Huntey hit a two-run double and came around to score the fourth run of the inning off Leichman's single.

Leichman hit four RBI on the day in the seventh to put CMU up 6-3.

Sophomore Jimmy McNamara and junior Tim Black combined to finish the final two and two thirds innings with Black earning the save.

THURSDAY

Junior ace Jordan Foley dominated in the opener as CMU won 3-0 behind his 7.1 innings pitched and 10 strikeouts as he gave up four hits and two walks.

The offense supplied enough support with a RBI triple from Collins in the fourth, Leichman singled in the fifth and junior second baseman Pat MacKenzie walked in a RBI in the sixth.

Junior left-handed pitcher Matt Trowbridge finished the 2.1 innings, earning him the save.
