Trustees approves $5.7 million deferred maintenance budget
Central Michigan University's Board of Trustees approved a $5.7 million deferred maintenance budget for the 2014-15 fiscal year during Tuesday's meeting.
The money will be used to repair and replace roofs as well as general masonry restoration.
Barrie Wilkes, vice president of Finance and Administrative Services, said the money will come from the capital budget, general fund, parking services and residence and auxiliary services.
However, the money from the capital budget will run out after the 2014-15 fiscal year, Wilkes said.
"In the past at this meeting we've brought forth with the capital budget and deferred maintenance was a part of that capital," he said. "There isn't any money left in the capital budget to fund projects so there really isn't any reason to bring it here. We've carved out deferred maintenance separately."
Trustees previously approved some pre-funding for maintenance at the February and April meetings.
Trustees approved $120,000 for masonry restoration, $980,000 for roof replacement and $2.16 million for South Quad residence hall safety improvements, including added fire suppression to Merrill, Sweeney, Beddow and Thorpe halls.
Other projects included in the deferred maintenance budget are elevator repairs, parking lot asphalt sealing, field turf replacement in Kelly/Shorts Stadium and a cooling tower for Charles V. Park Library.
"Steve (Lawrence, associate vice president of Facilities Management) and his folks can keep on fixing stuff (with this budget)," Wilkes said.
