Is Womanhood a protected right?

As a part of the Conversations that Matter series, a discussion revolving around this question will take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on March 23 at the Bovee University Center Rotunda. Admission is free and open to the public, according to Central Michigan University’s website.

Attendees will engage in a dialogue with guest speaker, JoEllen DeLucia, who is a faculty member in the department of English. According to the CMU’s website, a dinner will be provided.

Nikita Murry is the director of the Diversity Education office. She said the event is an opportunity for students to explore different topics or concerns related to womanhood. For example, attendees will be able to discuss what gender means and whether a person is born with gender, or it is something to embody and identity with.

“We have BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of color) women fighting for rights,” Murry said. “(We) have the need to focus on violence against women … then there’s the need to focus on violence against trans women.”

Murry said she hopes this discussion will help students think critically and make the world a better place.

“The issues that are facing the current generation as well as generations to come will be global problems,” Murry said. “If you only think of the world from a little box, you’ll never be able to fully engage in and fully be successful … because worldview perspective will be very limited.”
