ELIAS AND FARRELL: Focus on student, Trustee relations (VIDEO)

Editor's note: Central Michigan Life's editorial board will sit down with each pair of presidential and vice presidential candidates for the Student Government Association.

Here are some excerpts from the session with the candidates, speaking about topics like tuition and the upcoming presidential search.

Clarkston junior Lauren Elias and Allen Park junior Shane Farrell.

On tuition:

Lauren Elias: If it's going to be an increase, it's going to be a slow increase. With the way everything else is going, I'm not going to pretend we can lock in tuition. We have no power over that, but I think in talking with the Board of Trustees, we have a chance to sit with them and explain student ideas.

Shane Farrell: This is where I would like to say they (the Board of Trustees) would be more receptive to our ideas as opposed to some they have no working relationship with. So when we come in to them and say 'listen, we have the past history with you, we would like to work with you as much as possible but we cannot put up with this,' they really know we aren't doing this just to badger them.

On technology:

SF: Well last night, (at the SGA debate) I talked a little bit about technology. The Web site does have a blog, it's a new blog and we're going to update it regularly and we're also going to create a Facebook group and try to get everyone on campus to join this facebook group so they can get news feeds from this Facebook group, where we'll post after every SGA meeting. Maybe Monday night, Tuesday morning what's going on in SGA. On top of that, we're going to set up a Twitter account and they are basically mini-news feeds like Facebook. I think Facebook is a huge tool.

LE: Knowing that students are tech, I absolutely think it's the way to go for students who aren't always in RSOs or attending hall council meetings. But I think it's also important to have the people who are in SGA fully reporting back to their organizations too. I've been a House rep, I've sat next to kids that have fallen asleep during the house.

Looking at technology, we would like to have weekly columns coming out in CM Life, if that's possible. People can't read what they can't see. Making us available as possible.
