Softball team avenges prior loss to Penn State with win

The CMU softball team used a three-run fifth inning to beat Penn State 5-2 Tuesday in Clearwater, Fla.

Last Friday, Penn State handed CMU a 3-1 loss in the team's first game in Florida.

After a Nittany Lion error in the bottom of the fifth inning, junior catcher Amanda Klosterman moved runners to second base and third base with a sacrifice bunt. Redshirt freshman Brogan Darwin hit a sacrifice fly to left field while pinch hitting to give CMU a 2-1 lead.

Two batters later, senior right fielder Katie Greenman hit a two-RBI double to give CMU a 4-1 lead.

Both teams exchanged runs in the late innings, but CMU (4-6) held the 5-2 lead.

CMU freshman Kara Dornbos (2-2) pitched a complete game, allowing two runs and five hits while walking two. She had eight strikeouts in the win.

The Chippewas continue their stay in Clearwater, Fla., with five games this weekend. Their first game is at 9:30 a.m. Friday against Quinnipiac.
