Field hockey shut out by UC-Davis

The Central Michigan women's field hockey team was shut out for the third time this season Saturday, losing 3-0 against UC-Davis in St. Louis, Mo.

“Offensively, we certainly don’t think we should be shut out,” said CMU head coach Cristy Freese. “It’s just a mater of us doing a better job of connecting our passes and getting better quality shots in the circle.”

UC Davis (3-3) opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Lindsey Valadez deflected a rebound from a penalty corner into the net.

Just before the half, the Aggies added a second goal off a breakaway by Cloey LemMon.

UC-Davis finished off the Chippewas in the 63rd minute. Nadia Namdari recorded one of her two assists on the game, passing the ball up the middle to Emily Mecke who capitalized on the opportunity, sending the ball past junior Anastasia Netto.

Netto made seven saves between the pipes, giving up three goals in her fourth appearance of the season.

“Anna did OK in net,” Freese said. “She was at the disadvantage on two of (the goals) because they had breakaways.”

CMU continued to struggle offensively, losing the shots battle yet again 15-12. Although they did earn seven penalty corners to UC Davis’ four, they were unable to take advantage of any of them.

“Overall it wasn’t a good day, I think everybody needs to look inside themselves to play better tomorrow and better as a team,” Freese said.

The team looks to keep Saint Louis (0-7) winless at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Anheuser-Busch Center in St. Louis.

SLU has scored only one goal this season, being shut out six of the team’s seven games. The lone goal came in a 6-1 loss to Ohio on August 29.
