Volleyball drops Robert Morris/Duquesne opener

Volleyball opened play against the Duquesne Friday evening to start off the Robert Morris/Duquesne Tournament at the A.J. Palumbo Center.

In similar fashion to the Oakland Invitational, the Chippewas fell behind early in their opening match to the Dukes, dropping the first set 25-16.  The second set was much close, but CMU eventually fell again by a final score of 32-30.

The third set, however, was reminiscent of the comeback victory against Villanova.  After making the proper adjustments, the team looked to come back strong, winning the set 25-20.  This bright spot would not last for long.

Duquesne finally got the better of the Chippewas in the fourth set, which saw the Dukes barely coming out on top of by a final tally of 26-24.

On a night where it seemed as if a comeback was in the making, the Chippewas came up just short.  However, there were plenty of positives for the team to take away from their first match of the weekend.

Senior setter Kelley Maxwell compiled 48 assists in the loss, but was a key aspect in the Chippewas victory in the third set win.  Her teammate, junior Kaitlyn McIntyre contributed with 25 kills and 11 digs, while senior Jenna Coates had 28 digs.

The Chippewas look to rebound today when they square off against Robert Morris at 11 a.m and Xavier at 4 p.m. to finish up the Robert Morris/Duquesne Tournament.
