Junior guard Chris Fowler puts pressure on Youngstown State defense during the Chippewas

For the first time since 1981, Central Michigan University's men’s basketball team has started the season with five consecutive victories.

Junior forward Austin Stewart grabbed a key rebound and hit a free throw that sealed the Chippewas'  79-77 win over Grand Canyon University on Saturday night at McGuirk Arena.

The CMU men maintained a lead for the majority of the game, but the Antelopes stayed within striking distance until the final moments.

Junior guard Chris Fowler led all CMU scorers with 26 points. He also contributed four assists and three rebounds in CMU's victory.

Another junior, forward John Simons scored 21 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Simons shot 50 percent from the field and beyond the 3-point line, going 8-for-16 and 5-for-10, respectively.

The Chippewas will play their first road game of the season at 8 p.m. on Tuesday against Bradley University.
