This week in CMU history: First concert at newly built Rose Arena

On  Feb. 13, 1974, Central Michigan Life reported on a recent Program Board concert held in Rose Center.

The concert, Dave Mason with an opening act of Bachman-Turner Overdrive, packed the Rose Center with Central Michigan University. students.

Bachman-Turner Overdrive opened the show with their song “Trouble” and came across, the article stated, as remarkably polished.

Dave Mason, however, was completely overshadowed by the performance before his.

The article’s writer stated the major problem with Mason’s act was his unprofessional approach to the time between songs. Mason, taking up to five minutes in between songs to tune, brought audience involvement to a low.

It was generally agreed by CMU students that Mason treated the show as one he wanted to get done as soon as possible.

The concert was the first one held in the newly built arena.
