The sound of guitars echoed from the Herrig Classroom 1 as musicians played their way into a free recording session with Moore Media Records.

The on-campus, independent, student-run record label held an acoustic music competition Feb. 27.

The doors opened for competitors at 6:30 and the competition began at 7 p.m. Eight students performed, and a little over 20 people filled the seats in front of the small stage.

“There’s always a little bit of nerves involved when you’re about to go in front of a crowd, but I like to take those nerves and transfer the energy into the one you use to perform,” said Livonia junior Kyle Catalano.

The winning band received six hours of free recording at Moore Media Records. Two of those hours include mixing. Recording sessions usually cost $80.

The competition was open to anyone interested. Competitors performed five to six minute sets. The competition was judged on musicality, originality and musicianship.

“It was fun. It was a nice intimate environment so I felt comfortable,” said Genesee senior Devin Sapp. “It was very condensed, so it was low stress because we didn’t have to save any energy for later.”

Austin Banger-Lott and the duo junior Emily Lekich and sophomore Emily Parrish tied for third, The Savage Gentlemen placed second and seniors Devon and Cody Sapp won first place earning the free session.

“We’ve been a band for about six months now and we’ve been preparing for this for about a week,” said Clarkston senior Max Baker. “I always get a little nervous before I perform because I’m performing in front of people and anything can go wrong, but once I start, it all goes away.”
