BRIEF: Planning and City commissioners make M2 codes top priority

Solving Mount Pleasant's M2 zoning issues is now the top priority for Planning and City commissioners.

The two governing bodies met Thursday night in a special joint session to discuss 2015 priorities. Other priorities included the implementation of the city's revised master plan and an overlay plan for Mission Street.

Discussion on M2 codes consisted of a majority of the meeting. Commissioners concluded clarifying M2 codes could help solve a host of city issues such as housing density, resident quality of life and student behavior.

Setting a standard for new developments and boundaries could help quell resident's concerns about student housing overgrowth. Meanwhile, setting a standard could help both commissions find a way to incentive developers to build new professional housing.

By pointing all of their resources at M2 codes, Planning Commission Chair Keith Cotter said they can meticulously massage a new recommendations that both parties — and residents — can agree upon.

"It will never be perfect, but we won't send you a recommendation we don't like," Cotter said.
