COLUMN: My deepest gratitude

opinion

As I prepare to walk across the stage and into the next chapter of my life, I find there are so many things I would like to say. However, one of them rises above the rest.

Thank you.

Thank you to my professors for opening my mind and broadening my perspectives. Thank you to my advisers for encouraging me to pursue the things that are going to make me happy. Thank you to my friends and coworkers for inspiring me, putting up with me and cracking the much-needed jokes that kept me going on my most difficult days.

As the Voices Editor at Central Michigan Life this past semester, I owe a huge thank you to you, our audience.

At the beginning of the semester, I invited you to write to me, and you more than rose to the challenge. I asked to hear your voices, and you raised them loud and clear. In the past 15 weeks, I have received letters to the editor and guest columns on every subject, from volunteer opportunities to national issues.

Even when you disagreed with something CM Life published, I loved reading every word, because it showed how much you cared.

That, I think, was the most rewarding part of my job. To see such care, perseverance and passion come forth from the student body renewed my hope for this generation.

As millennials, we get called a lot of things. After this semester, one thing I know we are not is apathetic. As long as we have people as passionate and dedicated about social issues and causes as I have seen our readers to be, I know things are going to work out.

Thank you, readers and writers of Central Michigan University. Thank you for your words, your thoughts and your concerns. Though my time at college and at this newspaper is up, I pray that you will not stop writing.

As Walt Whitman said, "the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse."

The Voices section is your place to contribute your own unique verse. Keep writing, CMU.
