A Michigan State Police trooper from the Mount Pleasant Post was involved in a shooting yesterday in Marion, leaving a Hersey man dead.

The trooper was called to a report of a suspicious situation near the intersection of M-115 and 20 Mile Road in Osceola County. The caller reported a car was on its side and up against a house with a man frantically running around outside.

At about 12:30 p.m., the trooper found the man, who rushed toward him with a metal pipe, according to preliminary investigation and witness statements. The trooper fired his taser at the man, but it had no effect on him. Then the trooper fired his gun, striking the man.

The incident remains under investigation. Today, an autopsy is being conducted in Grand Rapids. The Michigan State Police are asking anyone who may have seen the incident to call the Mount Pleasant Post at (989) 773-5951.
