Freshman guard Presley Hudson protects the ball during the game against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Dec. 21, 2015 in McGuirk Arena. CMU defeated Southern Illinois-Edwardsville 78-65.

The game started off smoothly but things got a little shaky as the CMU women’s basketball team held on to beat the Miami (Ohio) Redhawks 72-58.

Presley Hudson led the Chippewas with 19 points, five rebounds and three assists. Reyna Frost also contributed by nabbing 10 rebounds. She had her average of nine rebounds per game at the end of the first quarter.

The Chippewas led 26-5 at the end of the first quarter after starting the game by scoring 20 of the first 22 points. By the end of the first half, Miami whittled the lead down to eight. Foul trouble and turnovers led to a Chippewa drought where they didn't score for more than five minutes.

"We went eight possessions without a score," said CMU Head Coach Sue Guevara. "We looked at the score and we had a letup. We had some silly fouls and unforced turnovers."

At halftime, the stat sheets were similar for both teams. CMU made 12-of-32 shots and was 6-for-18 from the 3-point line. Miami made 11-of-33 shots and was 3-for-18 from beyond the arc.

But the Chippewas were reignited in the second half, only giving up one 3-point shot and 27 second-half points.

The team hit 35.7 percent of its 3-pointers (33.2 percent per game average) and 41.1 percent of its total shots (41.8 percent per game average). Being consistent down the stretch and hitting many of its 3-pointers early in the game eventually led to the Chippewa victory.

Sophomore forward Tinara Moore finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds, recording her ninth double-double of the season. She is nearly averaging a double-double per game.

"She only touched the ball six times tonight," Guevara said. "She went 7-from-9 from the free-throw line. Teams are really giving her a lot of attention. But I think she's being very relentless on the glass and that's why she's rebounding the ball and she's securing the ball better."

As for Miami, sophomore guard Ana Richter, freshman guard/forward Kendall McCoy and sophomore guard Kayla Brown were a combined 3-for-22 with 12 points. The trio typically combines for 20 points per contest.

Miami’s leading scorer and star player Baleigh Reed was sustained a leg injury in the fourth quarter. She was helped off the court after lying on the ground for several minutes. She had 15 points.

CMU moves to 10-7 on the year and 4-2 in Mid-American Conference play. Miami drops to 7-10 overall and 1-5 in the MAC.

CMU comes home for a 1 p.m. Saturday game to take on the Akron Zips (9-7, 3-2 MAC).
