Ex-Minnesota football commit on his way to CMU
Central Michigan football's 2016 recruiting class is starting to take shape, with Lansing Catholic quarterback/tight end Tony Poljan committing to the Chippewas this week.
Poljan had originally verbally committed to Minnesota, but decommitted in November after Minnesota had several coaches leave the program after Head Coach Jerry Kill retired due to health issues.
At 6-foot-7 and 230 pounds, the three-star talent also had received offers from Michigan State, Nebraska, Iowa State, and Oklahoma State, according to MLive. Those schools were recruiting him as a full-time tight end, but Poljan has plans to become a full-time quarterback.
CMU, Eastern Michigan, Toledo and Buffalo offered Poljan a scholarship to play quarterback.
With Lansing Catholic in 2015, Poljan went 11-2 with more than 1,900 passing yards and 16 touchdowns, along with more than 1,200 yards rushing and 25 touchdowns, for a total of over 3,100 yards and 41 touchdowns. He led Lansing Catholic to a regional title for the second time and was a top 10 finalist for Michigan High School Football Player of the Year.
Not only is Poljan a diverse player on the football field, but he is also looking at the possibility of being a two-sport athlete, as he also plays basketball in high school.
Poljan is following in the footsteps of a current CMU quarterback, junior Cooper Rush. Rush also attended Lansing Catholic, graduating in 2012. During his time at CMU, Rush has accumulated 9,351 passing yards, 67 passing touchdowns and the record for most passing touchdowns ever in any bowl game with seven during the 2014 Bahamas Bowl.
Poljan is now CMU's highest-rated Chippewa this recruiting season, according to 247Sports.com. His overall rating is an 85.53, and is ranked 19th among recruits from Michigan.
The 31st-ranked recruit, former Michigan standout Braylon Edwards' little brother Bailey, committed to the Chippewas over the weekend.
Everything will become official on Feb. 3, National Signing Day, the first day a high school senior can sign a binding letter of intent to commit to a college football team.
