Women's basketball can't hold off Bobcats in 86-84 OT loss

Central Michigan women's basketball appeared to be on track for its third consecutive win as it led Ohio by 12 at halftime, Saturday in Athens.
Then Ohio’s Kiyanna Black took over while CMU’s youth became apparent.
The Chippewas (9-7, 3-2 Mid-American Conference) dropped 95 points on Northern Illinois Wednesday at McGuirk Arena and continued their elevated play into the first half Saturday, leading the 13-3 (5-0 MAC) Bobcats 38-26 after the first two quarters in the Convocation Center.
CMU’s sophomore forward Tinara Moore was on track for her ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and five rebounds at the half and Ohio’s leading scorer Black (16.8 points per game) had just two points.
But the Chippewas, tasked with fending off the defending MAC champions for 20 more minutes, couldn’t hang on as the Bobcats completed the comeback victory 86-84 in overtime.
CMU Head Coach Sue Guevara said she asked her team “to play their guts out, to leave everything on the floor,” which she said is exactly what they did.
“We battled. We battled with the best team in our league and we lost in overtime,” Guevara said. “I am very encouraged that our kids can play with the best team in this league and we had them on the ropes in their court.”
CMU had five players score double-digit points including 22 from Moore, 16 from Jewel Cotton and Cassie Breen respectively, 14 from Presley Hudson and 10 from Da’Jourie Turner.
Only one Bobcat, Black, finished with double-digit points. Black, the 2015 MAC Tournament MVP, scored 37 points in the second half and overtime, finishing with 39.
“Big players make big plays,” Guevara said about Black. “That’s why she’s the best guard in our league. We had people up in her grill.”
After trailing the entire first half, Ohio started the third quarter with a 3-pointer from Black, setting the tone for the fast-paced second half.
A pair of Black free throws cut CMU’s lead to 49-44 with 3:45 left in the third quarter, but a 3-pointer from Breen and a layup from freshman forward Reyna Frost gave CMU a nine point lead, 61-52, heading into the final quarter.
Ohio erased most of a 10-point deficit in the final minutes. Hudson hit a pair a free throws with 18 seconds to go, giving CMU a 75-71 lead.
Moore committed a foul with 14 seconds left. Ohio’s Hannah Boesinger hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to two.
A Quiera Lampkins layup off a CMU turnover tied the game 75-75. Hudson's missed layup sent the game into overtime, where the Bobcats took their first lead of the game with 3:40 left in OT on a Black free throw.
Black then extended the Bobcats’ lead with her fifth 3-pointer of the night at the 2:48-mark, giving Ohio the 85-81 lead. Hudson missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer as time expired.
"I'm proud of our effort. I'm very happy with the way we battled. It's an encouraging loss." Guevara said. "This team is only going to get better and you know what? They're hurting, they're accountable to each other and that right there is big."
CMU totaled 18 total turnovers, double Ohio's nine, including a crucial turnover with 14 seconds left in regulation by Cotton. Guevara said although she cannot comment on the officiating, she wasn't particularly happy with the no-call that resulted in Cotton's turnover.
"(Cotton) came (to catch) the ball and she got hammered," Guevara said. "She tried to get that ball and that ball went out of bounce on Jewel. I mean she got hammered. That's all I can say."
