CMU to host 27th annual Powwow in McGuirk Arena this weekend

The 27th annual Powwow will take place this weekend in McGuirk Arena.

Doors open at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets are free for Central Michigan University students with their student IDs and for children less than four years of age. Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe members can also get in for free with an ID. 

Tickets for adults ages 18 to 54 are $10, and are $7 for seniors 54 years of age and older. Children between the ages of five and 7-years-old can purchase a ticket for $7.  

A weekend pass for both days of the Powwow is $15.

Saturday's grand entries will start at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Grand entries for Sunday begin at 12 p.m. A grand entry is when all participating dancers in the Powwow dance together on the main contest floor.

Different contests will take place during the two-day event, including a drum contest, adult dance contest and hand drum contest.

First prize for the drum contest is $3,000, and $2,000 for second place. A $1,000 prize will be given for third. 

Dancers who win first prize in the adult dance contest will receive $400, second prize will receive $300 and third place, $200. 

First prize for the hand drum contest is $500.

More than 20 craft vendors will be present, selling arts and crafts.

The event is sponsored by more than 15 organizations including North American Indigenous Student Organization, the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe and CMU's Office of the President.
