Police report increase in crime at night during St. Patrick's Day

An "uneventful" morning turned into a busy night on St. Patrick's Day for Mount Pleasant Police officers, though St. Patrick's Day arrests and calls to the police were slightly less than last year's holiday.

"It (was) consistent with what we've come to expect," said Officer Jeff Browne.

He said there were no notable incidents during the day, describing the incidents as "run-of-the-mill."

Police received 158 calls for service, arrested eight people and wrote 22 citations for disorderly conduct, minor in possession, open intoxication and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

"The complaint load picked up for us in the afternoon, and then at 3 and 4 in the morning," Browne said.

Last year, Mount Pleasant Police received 165 calls for service, arrested 10 people and 19 tickets for the same offenses.

Central Michigan University police reported 11 citations and four arrests for minor in possession, four arrests for operating while intoxicated, and one drug citation for possession of marijuana on campus.

Lt. Cameron Wassman said the only incident not involving drugs on campus was an attempted suicide at Wheeler Hall. A 20 year-old woman swallowed several prescribed pills and was taken to McLaren Central Michigan.
