Chippewas win on Senior Day, claim MAC West title
It was Senior Day at McGuirk Arena for the Central Michigan women’s basketball team as they took on the Eastern Michigan Eagles with a Mid-American Conference West Division title at streak.
Seniors Da’Jourie Turner and Chelsea Lynn were able to get one more victory at home as the Chippewas (20-9, 14-4 MAC) defeated the Eagles (19-10, 10-8 MAC) by a score of 78-70. The win clinches the No. 2 seed in the upcoming MAC Tournament and earns the Chippewas a MAC West Championship.
Hot start for both teams
Less than seven minutes into the game, both teams recorded five 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Cassie Breen had three of those on six attempts for CMU. By the end of the first quarter, EMU was on pace for 100 points, with CMU on pace for 84. Both teams were over 50 percent on 3-pointers. EMU was 10-for-17 (58.8 percent) for field goals and CMU was 8-for-18 (44.4%).
Breen had nine points on 3-of-8 shooting, with all eight of those shots being from behind the 3-point line. There were only two other attempted 3-point shots in the first quarter that weren’t from Breen. Turner and freshman guard Presley Hudson had the other two.
Redshirt junior guard forward Jewel Cotton came off the bench and had 19 points heading into the fourth quarter. She finished with 20 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in 20 minutes played. She finished with 20 of CMU’s 22 bench points.
Frost’s fourth quarter and Hudson’s double-double
In the first three quarters of the game, freshman forward Reyna Frost had five points and two rebounds. Things changed in the fourth as she recorded six points and a rebound in the first two minutes and 37 seconds alone. She ended up with 15 points and five rebounds.
Hudson had 11 points and 11 rebounds on the day. She hit a 3-point basket with 30.5 seconds left to give her the double-double and to put the Chippewas up by five points. She shot 4-of-8 and 3-of-7 from beyond the 3-point line.
What’s next
The Chippewas will have a bye heading into the MAC Tournament and will play next on Wednesday.
