The Central Michigan University Board of Trustees voted Friday to raise the cost of undergraduate tuition.

During the 2016-17 school year, undergraduate tuition will cost $405 per credit hour — a $10 increase from the previous year.

Graduate tuition was increased 3.9 percent to $548 per credit hour.

"State funding (alone) allows CMU to operate just 61 days," said President George Ross during his address to the board.

"We're doing the best we can in the model we have right now," said Trustee Robert Wardrop. "We need to do better, yes. But we are doing as well or better than other universities in Michigan."

CMU's latest tuition hike follows an 14 percent cumulative six-year tuition increase, the lowest among Michigan public universities.

Tuition comprised almost 60 percent of CMU's operating budget this year, while state appropriations funded only 17 percent.
