Lacrosse kicks off final weekend with victory over winless Howard


Freshman midfielder Jocelyne Lemay is the first player in Central Michigan lacrosse program history to reach the 30-goal plateau.

The Peterborough, Ontario, native scored four goals to lead the Chippewas to a 11-5 victory over Howard, who has yet to win a game this season.

CMU improves to 6-9 and 2-5 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Howard falls to 0-13 (0-7 A-Sun).

Lemay is now tied for sixth in the conference with Detroit's Lexie Kinmond. Lemay entered the game tied for 11th in the A-Sun with 29 goals.

The Chippewas jumped out to a 7-0 lead early. The first five goals were scored by freshmen midfielders Natalie Bloniarz, Lemay, Riley Huda, Anna Schoonover and Logan Halvorson. The latter was scored on a free position shot with 15:26 remaining the in the first half.

Lemay then tallied two goals to make it 7-0 before Howard cut the lead to five, 7-2, on two free position-shot goals. Lemay scored her fourth goal with 26:11 remaining in the game to push the lead to 8-2. 

Bloniarz and freshman attacker Rachel Morin added back-to-back goals to push the lead to 10-2. The Bisons scored three consecutive goals before freshman midfielder Kaitlin Kimble extended the lead to 11-5.

The Chippewas used three goalkeepers. Freshman Clare Laughery stopped five shots while allowing two goals.

CMU is currently in seventh place in the nine-member A-Sun and will miss the A-Sun Tournament. The Chippewas close out their inaugural season at home against Old Dominion at noon Sunday.
