First phase of Grawn Hall renovation underway

Construction on the first phase of Grawn Hall's $10.8 million addition and renovation began May 9.

Facilities Management Vice President Stephen Lawrence said Granger Construction Company began last week with demolition work, electrical preparations and window removal. Window removal is expected to be complete by Aug. 1. Demolition in the hall's basement has also begun and is expected to be complete by Friday.

Over the next two weeks, Lawrence said Granger will have completed auger cast piles and underground plumbing in the existing building. Construction of a new dumpster enclosure and an opening in the building for a new air-handling unit begins this week.

Crews are currently removing asbestos materials from the second and third floors of the building. Ceiling demolition on those floors is scheduled to be complete by Friday. New ceiling will be installed starting May 23.

"When we encounter asbestos containing materials, they are removed by qualified contractors prior to commencing other work," Lawrence said in an email. "The asbestos abatement work is also monitored. I don't believe anyone should be concerned due to care that is taken during this process."

The project will add 6,600 square feet to the building. The finished addition will include a two story atrium that will be able to hold about 200 people for presentations and events held by the College of Business Administration.

The addition includes a new café, a quiet study room and an academic advising office.

The project is slated to end during the summer of 2017.
