Athletics receives Institutional Sportsmanship Award, three Chippewas honored at MAC Spring Meetings
Three Chippewas were individually honored and Central Michigan Athletics received its second-consecutive Institutional Sportsmanship Award Wednesday evening at the Mid-American Conference Spring Meetings in Cleveland.
The Institutional Sportsmanship Award goes to the university that exemplifies the core values of the conference's mission statement. Each of the 12 MAC institutions received a vote.
Student-athletes Breanne Lesnar and Ryan Heeke received the Medal of Excellence Award from the conference. While Mary Weston, former CMU instructor, coach and administrator, was inducted into the MAC Hall of Fame.
One male and one female athlete from each MAC school is given the Medal of Excellence Award.
Selected by each institution, the award is given to student-athletes who have achieved a minimum 3.50 grade-point average, excelled athletically and exhibited leadership and service.
Heeke, senior baseball player, has two bachelor’s degrees from CMU. He earned one bachelor of science in business administration in May 2015 and a bachelor of science with a math major in May 2016. He carries a 3.78 grade point average.
Lesnar, senior cross country and track & field member, will graduate in August with a bachelor of science degree. She carries a 4.0 grade point average.
During her 42 years at CMU, Weston served a number of roles before she retired in 2015.
She is a member of the CMU Athletics Hall of Fame, named in her honor. In 1991, Weston was recognized by the NCAA as one of the nine major contributors to the first decade of NCAA women’s basketball.
