Former CMU basketball player Simmons talks Summer League, opportunities

Although former Central Michigan basketball player Rayshawn Simmons didn't play with the Washington Wizards during the NBA Summer League, the two-time Chippewa captain still has his head held high and a game plan in mind.

"Now that the Summer League is over, I'll be searching for the best contract offer for me to play professionally, whether it's (in the NBA) or overseas," Simmons said.

Simmons said he believes he's done a good job by getting to the Summer League despite not being able to play in any game because of the competition found among the Wizards. Players selected in the NBA Draft like Kelly Oubre Jr. from Kansas and Aaron White from Iowa consistently had playing time, leaving players like Simmons on the bench.

But even though Simmons wasn't able to show off his talents on the court during games, he still was able to pick up on some things.

"The biggest difference (from college and Summer League) is the attention to detail and room for error," Simmons said. "It's a lot of stuff I learned in college, just on a higher scale. It's a 'get it when taught' kind of thing instead of someone waiting for you to get it right."

Simmons was used to seeing plenty of minutes when he was in college. He averaged 33.1 minutes during his senior year with the Chippewas. He also averaged 12.1 points and five assists in 33 games last season.

Regardless of where he plays, or how much he plays, Simmons said he is grateful for every opportunity.

"It's been a blessing to be in the position I'm in and only be an opportunity or two away from making a major impact," he said. "I am honored and blessed. I've worked for this and I know if I keep working that I'll only continue to take steps forward."
