First community water gun fight a success, could return again next summer

A water gun fight at the intersection of Main and Broadway Streets in Downtown Mount Pleasant wasn't scheduled to begin until 6:45 p.m. Thursday evening, but participants couldn't help starting the melee sooner.

By 6:20 p.m., children and adults began the first ever community-wide water gun fight — "Super Soaker Festivus." The event was the third event of the city's "Thrilling Thursdays" series.

Special Events Coordinator Melinda Salchert said she only expected around 20 people to show up — nearly 100 came.

Salchert called the water fight "silly summer fun," saying the event was something she'd like to see happen again next summer.

"This particular event isn't going to bring a lot of business to the (downtown) businesses," she said. "But what we want people to do is start thinking about the downtown more as a destination. We really want to encourage people to re-frame it. We have gorgeous parks, restaurants, shopping, banks and a library. There's so much to do downtown, plus these events and Max and Emily's Concert (Series). We just want people to be reminded of 'Hey, we rock down here.'"

Slachert said the hashtag #MakeDowntownYourDestination has been created to develop a presence on social media.

The Thrilling Thursday series continues every Thursday until Aug. 18.

The next Thrilling Thursday event, on July 7, will be "Superhero Princess Extravaganza." The event begins at 6 p.m. in the Town Center and ends at 8 p.m. Click the link for more information.
