Former Central Michigan football head coach Herb Deromedi attended CMU's practice Tuesday to check on the team before its upcoming matchup against undefeated Western Michigan.

Deromedi ranks first in Mid-American Conference history and school history with 110 career wins as a coach. He now sits on the NCAA College Football Playoff Selection Committee, which decides which teams are invited to participate in the playoff each season.

CM LIFE: What was the rivalry with Western Michigan like when you were coaching at CMU (1978-1993)?

DEROMEDI: It was a great rivalry. At the time I became head football coach in 1978, we really didn't have a great record against WMU. In the 16 years I was the head coach, we hit a great string and only lost to them twice. I was very proud of that.

dIt was one of the red-marked games every year and it has been ever since. A rivalry becomes a rivalry when you know that regardless of record, your opponent is going to come in to play their best game and you better be the same. It's a game where there is tremendous competition by players that want it for both schools, which is what makes it exciting.

How does the crowd help during a rivalry game?

DEROMEDI: It's a tremendous feeling when you come out of that locker room and have the opportunity to realize this game is important to a lot of people. You realize that as you practice and prepare for it, but it gets magnified on game day.

When I watch today, three-fourths of the student body leaves by the fourth quarter. When I was coaching, we had at least three-fourths or greater still in the stands.

This is the type of game where the enthusiasm of the fans play such a factor in bringing out the best of the football team. It gives you an attitude that you don't quit. It helps to be inspired. I hope our student body can realize the impact they can make on the team.

What do you think of the job John Bonamego has done so far?

DEROMEDI: They work hard at recruiting, getting ready in the offseason and getting the program ready for the next season. He has a tremendous coaching staff that loves being here.

I feel very confident in the direction the program is going. The way I look at it is to not worry about the years ahead, but focus on right now.

Cooper Rush has received a lot of attention as a possible NFL draft pick. What do you see in his game?

DEROMEDI: I think he's phenomenal, just simply outstanding at every aspect of the game. I've had my share of winning quarterbacks, but he truly is a winner.

I believe his arm is strong enough and I know he's smart enough. If I was a pro club, I would take a chance and draft him.

What do you think is going to happen in the game on Saturday?

DEROMEDI: Central goes in as an underdog. Everyone is saying we're pretty beat up, but I'm really looking forward to CMU winning this game.
