Women's hoops head to Notre Dame for Preseason WNIT
To open the 2016 season, the Central Michigan women's basketball team will travel to Indiana to play the top ranked team in the Associated Press Poll — Notre Dame.
The Chippewas will play the Irish Friday at 7 p.m. in the first round of the Women's Preseason National Invitation Tournament.
Describing Friday's game as a "special opportunity" for CMU, head coach Sue Guevara said her team doesn't need to be convinced of Notre Dame's ability and its own ability.
"This team is basketball educated," she said of her Chippewas. "They know Notre Dame. They know their rank. They know all of that. We are just looking to control what we can control against Notre Dame so we can compete."
The Irish will pose a good test for a CMU team returning four starters from last season. The Chippewas are favored to win the Mid-American Conference West Division and the MAC Tournament Championship.
Guevara said her team will focus on what they can control for Friday's game.
"We're getting ready to control things that we can control," she said. "We'll try limiting things that Notre Dame does, limiting how many points they get in transition, limiting points off turnovers and really trying to stop the point in the paint."
The winner will take on the winner of Fordham and Furman in the second round of the tournament.
