Research forum celebrates College of Medicine accomplishments

Accomplishments in student research will be honored at the second annual Mount Pleasant Campus Research Forum.

Three students from the College of Medicine will give presentations on research they've completed in their first two years of medical school. The hour-long event will take place at noon today in CMED Building Room 1404.

A previous forum held on Jan. 17 showcased 19 student presentations. At the end, 22 students will be honored for their work in research.

The forum is also intended to develop relationships with faculty and departments outside the college, said medical faculty member Harold Bell.

“The college is fairly new on campus," Bell said. "We want to encourage collaborations and for other faculty (and let them) know what we’re doing. We want (the entire campus) to have the chance to know what we’re doing and the research (students) have done."

Bell organized the forum to challenge students to present complicated, medical concepts to a general. Bell said the forum is open to everyone and is a good tool for the college’s most promising students.

“They’re going to have to talk to patients every day and communicate complicated concepts," Bell said. "So this is a sort of chance to talk to a non-expert audience and present research that potential members of the audience don’t know much about."
