CMU defeats Bowling Green, stays undefeated in the MAC

It wasn't until the end of Saturday's game against Bowling Green that the Central Michigan women's basketball team bounced back to stay undefeated in Mid-American Conference play.

After BGSU guard Sydney Lambert hit a triple to send the game into overtime, CMU sophomore guard Presley Hudson answered with 10 points to lead the Chippewas to a 76-65 victory.

Hudson struggled the entire first half, putting up just five points. Head Coach Sue Guevara said Hudson's momentum picked up in the second half.

“She started doing some counter moves because people were bodying her up, which they should at this point,” Guevara said. “She hit a couple step-backs, she was able to penetrate, and got a couple scores. Bowling Green wasn't giving her any space what so ever, but big players make plays at big times and thats what she did.”

Guevara said it just came down to being able to bounce back and play defense heading into overtime.

“It was a matter of us buckling down on defense, finding the three point shooters no matter where they were, and just looking to attack the basket,” Guevara said. “We just have to do a better job getting out there and contesting shots moving forward, but we responded well to a three that could of put a dagger through us.”

BGSU led by at least eight points for more than 23 minutes in the game. CMU didn't look like the dominant team until it outscored the Falcons 15-4 in overtime.

Hudson was one of three Chippewas to score in double-figures. Junior guard Aleah Swary had 10 points and added four rebounds. Sophomore forward Reyna Frost had a double-double with 12 points and 23 rebounds, which is the second all-time program record for rebounds in a single game.

Frost and Cotton combined for 35 of CMU’s 52 rebounds. Guevara said it was those two who "gave CMU life" and led the team to another victory.

“That is just Unbelievable for Reyna, but Jewel Cotton was also big,” Guevara said. “We had no presence inside, and they were there to give that to us when we needed it the most.”

CMU will be back at McGuirk Arena to take on Miami (Ohio) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
